Cloudflare has given an update on its x402 plans.
The global data provider has unveiled its latest addition to developer documentation for integrated stablecoin payments for AI Agents. With that, website developers and companies are able to charge AI Agents crawling content and calling website data via the x402 protocol, paying in stablecoins.
According to the latest x402 data, actual onchain transactions for the large part have been fewer than broader expectations from AI and digital asset space. Since May 2025, there have only been 187M onchain transactions with a total value of $50M.
However, since the start of April 2026, there is a clear increase in the number of merchants and buyers added to the x402 protocol marketplace – perhaps as a direct result of improved AI Agent infrastructure (including OpenClaw and Hermes Agent).
In their blog post, Cloudflare goes on to describe the mechanism behind the workflow of AI Agents getting the handler instructions to go on to search the web or execute specific tasks.
Called Cloudflare Monetization Gateway, this allows for an integration with improved agentic protocols, as well as a setup to enable stablecoin payouts for certain http requests and page visits.
That means that any type of call (API, MCP, REST, etc.) can be controlled and priced to be paid in stablecoins from an agent’s stablecoin wallet. Both Circle’s USDC and OpenStandard’s OUSD stablecoins are mentioned as top examples.
Additionally, any user of Cloudflare’s infrastructure and product solutions is able to make a payment via a stablecoin checkout using USDC on Base or Polygon.
Last year, it was revealed that the Cloudflare NET stablecoin was being developed, although there haven’t been any updates as of this year related to its status.
