Celo has announced that the USAT stablecoin is officially launching on its blockchain network.

Tether’s second dollar-backed stablecoin is making its entrance to the Celo network, only a few months after launching in the U.S. under the Genius Act regime.

Previously only on Ethereum and currently with around $185M in circulating supply per DefiLlama, USAT stablecoin is following in the footsteps of its older brother USDT to go live on Celo.

Emerging Markets

Tether’s choice for Celo becoming the next network launch is no coincidence.

Celo has positioned itself as a network that makes it easy for both blockchain developers and stablecoin holders to engage with onchain application and global payments.

It has consistently stayed in the top 10 chains for stablecoin supply over the last 12 months and recently crossed 1.4B total transactions since its launch per GrowThePie data.

Recently, Tether had partnered with Opera’s MiniPay wallet in order to scale its distribution for USDT across emerging economies.

Both teams are focused on providing more accessible infrastructure for low cost and low friction environments, and the latter has a strong relationship with the Celo team and foundation.

Following a migration away from Ethereum to its own Layer 1, then back to Ethereum as a Layer 2, as well as undergoing several core network upgrades in the last year, Celo is allowing new stablecoins into its ecosystem to deliver better liquidity for users.

USAT Stablecoin User Growth

Tether’s global USDT user count sits at 680M per its USDT network data – growing from 500M users in October 2025 – so it remains to be seen if USAT can replicate its success domestically for the North American market as it has done across developing nations.

All eyes are on USAT to see how it will fare with existing stablecoin choices, such as USDC, USDG, RLUSD, PYUSD, especially now that Tether has a custodian and issuance partner in Anchorage.

Aside from that, Tether’s global brand positioning, alongside with the help of Bo Hines who lead the Genius Act effort in Washington last July, can certainly gain a healthy share of new U.S. based users.
